Auschwitz was a network of concentration and extermination camps established by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was located in German-occupied Poland and consisted of three man sections:

Auschwitz I: This was the original concentration camps and administrative center of the whole complex. It was established in May 1940 and served as a model for other Nazi concentration camps. Initially intended for Polish political prisoners, it later become a place of imprisonment and torture for people from various nationalities, including Jews, Roma and Soviet prisoners of war.

Auschwitz II-Birkenau: Built in October 1941 as an extermination camp, it was designed specifically for the mass murder of Jews and other targeted groups. It had multiple gas chambers and crematoria where millions of people were systematically killed in the Holocaust`s genocide.

Auschwitz III-Monowitz: Also knows as Buna or Monowitz, this camp was established in 1942 and operated as a labor camp. It was an industrial complex where prisoners were forced to work in factories producing synthetic rubber and fuel for the German war effort.

Inside Block 11, there were cramped standing cells where prisoners were kept in extreme isolation and darkness as a form of punishment.

Another unique feature of Auschwitz I is the Wall of Death, located near Block 11. This was a site where thousands of prisoners, mostly political opponents, were executed by firing squads during the early period of the camps`s existence.
